Kennicott, Alaska
📍 Kennicott, Alaska
In 1900, prospectors discovered rich copper deposits high in Alaska’s Wrangell Mountains. Within a few years, a booming mining town rose from the wilderness, and workers carved a railway through glaciers, canyons, and some of the harshest terrain in North America to transport the ore.
For nearly 30 years, Kennicott thrived. Then, in 1938, the copper ran out.
The mine closed. Workers left. The machinery fell silent.
Today, the towering red mill still stands above the valley like a monument to a vanished era. Visitors have reported phantom footsteps echoing through empty buildings, shadowy figures watching from mill windows, and strange cries near the cemetery after dark.
Whether those stories are ghosts or simply echoes of the past, Kennicott remains one of Alaska’s most hauntingly beautiful ghost towns.
